Bridges

Bridges are mysterious, connecting two places that cannot otherwise touch, crossing liminal space, the between. Unlike time, we can go back and forth over a bridge. They may cross rivers, valleys, or parts of cities. What’s being connected?

Bridges play a role in dreams. Last June, I dreamed that I walked along a bridge; I asked an Asian boy carrying things “like a vendor” if he could move over for me to pass. A man coming the other way explained that it’s “a different city with different ways.” Cities in dreams have been described as our ego. To enter the city is to enter the conscious mind.

I’ve blogged before about a dream I had when deciding whether to join a publishing coop. In it, I climbed a barren road high in the Afghan mountains, alone. I entered a work compound through a gate (threshold) and followed a helpful Englishman to a natural bridge spanning between two doors, a sheer drop beyond. Later, in the workshop, his wife pointed to a journal with “Knightsbridge” on the cover. Clearly the dreaming self values the bridge image. A passage to stand in a different city (mind space) with different ways?
