I wrote this story today to a prompt: write about a young person warned against something like thin ice; being cautioned can lead to the opposite.

Don’t run in socks!
“Remember not to wear socks in the hall. It’s slipper–”
“Good idea!” William took a running start and whizzed away around the corner in a surf-crouch.
“William, that’s dangerous!”
“It’s fun, Mom. Don’t you remember sliding in socks?” He returned for another round.
“Don’t test me, William!”
“Look how far I can go!” Whizz… Crash… William collapsed in a laughing heap by the wall..
“Let me try.” Little sister Amy came running in thin socks, turning like a figure skater, gliding into Wiliam.
“Come on, Mom. You try.”
“Heavens, no. You don’t need an elephant on you,” Marci giggled into her hand.
“Just one,” William and Amy crowed.
“Oh, fine.” Marci disappeared into her bedroom. She came out wearing three fluffy pairs of foot-warmer socks. “Cowabunga!!!!” she yelled, running, turning in a wide-legged slide…
just as Glen walked in the front door, into her path, with pizzas…
