I’m considering going to a writers’ retreat near Quincy, IL hosted by the Indies United publishing group. I haven’t been aware of the city of Quincy though I guess it’s quite historic. It started on a tract of 160 acres bought for $60 in 1819 and became Quincy in 1840, named after John Quincy Adams. It apparently has “some of the most beautiful homes in the country.” I guess if we rent a car, we can cruise around looking for them.

The actual retreat is at Ursa, IL, on seven acres, with swimming and other fun activities. The retreat house has wrap around porches with swings. Sounds like summer in the south to me! (or midwest). The retreat will include a cook-out, fireside stories, workshops, The Quincy Public Library is hosting ten readings. You can sell your books, but do I want to lug books on the plane?
There’s also book signing at Enchanted Books. (I like that name.). I guess I could ship books. There will be Inspirational Women Awards for Media, Literature and Journalism, supporting charities for abused women. There’s a gala event awarding the Small Bites short story winner.
Still deciding! What do you think?

Hey Marie, If going to the retreat calls to you and you can afford it, I say go for it! I’ve long thought that it would be wonderful to go a writers retreat.

Thank you, Cristina! Nice to hear from you. I don’t think it’s the kind of retreat where you go off and do deep writing along with classes or workshops. It’s only three days and there are a lot of family activities, award ceremonies, book signings in town. Maybe not what you picture. What do you picture?

It looks wonderful. Do you want to go mainly to write or for the connections and exposure?

You make a good point, Janet. This “retreat” is not the kind I’ve imagined, where you stay in little cabins in a pastoral setting and think of nothing but writing. This would be more for connections and exposure, though the exposure would be in a small realm. And the trip relatively expensive overall. This year’s been costly with relaunching all my books.
