Choosing Character & Place Names

Names come to me. It’s maybe like a soul thing. I seek a name and hear it. I know when it’s right for the situation. To me it’s akin to my love of singing, and languages, writing systems, and a few other soul passions (well, like writing fiction!).

People I’ve shared my writing with comment on enjoying the names in my Lost Xentu series. I love the process whether I’m making up entirely new place and character names, or discovering the right ones through research.

For Braided Dimensions, which goes into medieval time here on Earth, I researched old Welsh names, Traveler names (of Wales in particular), and names of Cornwall (I love the very Cornish ones.

For the later books in the series, I found Jutlander, old Germanic, and Norwegian ones. I’d almost say I taste the name and savor its quality for the part. Names set off my imagination and I feel them as an integral part of scene development.
