Writing Prompts

Writing prompts can be fun, freeing in a sense. I’d say a “good” prompt but I think that’s a very individual thing. Each of us would respond differently to prompts. What inspires my muse might not inspire yours at all. Why is it freeing? What I mean by that is it isn’t attached to a larger project, like a novel or work assignment. It invites free associations, in an open field.

I’ve gone on some searches for ‘good’ writing prompts and haven’t found many that appeal to me so I think I just have to come up with some of my own.

Here’s one: Imagine it’s the year 2060. Write for ten minutes. Get up in the morning with your main character and live a day with them.

If you got inspired to respond to this prompt, feel free to send me what you write! I might share some of it here (with your permission, of course!).

Here’s another one. You’re walking along in a busy city. A man comes up to you wearing a top hat and old fashioned suit. He says he’s just arrived in town and has no idea where to stay or what to do. He can’t quite recall how he got there. He smells of trains and cigar smoke. What do you say to him? What do you do? Write for ten minutes.

Feel free to share! And/or to send a prompt of your own!
