Research & Synchronicity

I believe in synchronicities, the idea that meaningful coincidences occurring close together are a message from the universe, or the soul. Recently I’ve been talking with a writer friend about my dream to write an historical novel about generations of my family and the synchronicities have been abounding.

Discussing how I hope to step outside my fantasy/sci fi comfort zone pushed me, last week, to read the notes I started sixteen years ago. What started as a circling around, floundering toward the novel CPG, Carl Porter Gray, ended up in a close study of the year I went to live with my mom before she passed away. It’s a powerful account that affected me deeply.

I think it’s impossible not to ponder—try to make meaning of—suicide. My grandfather, CPG, took his own life when my dad was five. James Hillman wrote about the taboo subject in Suicide and the Soul. It’s helpful to read such a thoughtful, well-developed exploration I’m only a fourth of the way through but it’s a small book.

  1. I’ve also pondered a way to write about my father’s suicide. I read Hillman’s book, though not all the way through! I am not remembering my dreams. We leave for the Cotswolds today and will be in one place for 6 days. Maybe that will help. xo

  2. Good to hear from you on your travels, Robin! Maybe you’ll write creative nonfiction that touches on that theme. It’s always helpful to work through experiences that have touched our lives, through writing. I bet you’re seeing beautiful places! I hope some dreams stick. They seem to come and go in waves. xo
