Ancestral Names

Judith Poley 1598-1661

Over the past couple of decades, as I’ve worked on building my ancestral tree, I’ve collected names of people and places that intrigue or amuse me. I’ve picked some favorites to share here.

People

  • Camby Duckworth (1480-1535)
  • Cecelia Harlyngrugge (1343-1428)
  • Mary Kibblewhite (1457–1525)
  • Olive Strangeways (1432-1488)
  • William Glasscock (1495 1580)

Some sound like Hobbits:

  • Maud Greystock (1380-1475)
  • Ellen Rockerfoote (1555-1640)

[Ancestors, please forgive me for using your names in this way. I’m sure some, in your era, were not nearly as entertaining.]

Places (mostly English)

  • Ribblesdale,Yorkshire, England
  • Rockbear, Devon, England
  • Alzey-Worms, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
  • Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England
  • Mucklestone, Staffordshire, England

[I’m not sure if all these places still exist. Some records are from centuries ago.]

I hope you enjoyed this little foray into names. I’ll probably dig through again at another point because there are hundreds more treasures in there.
