No Regrets – is it possible?

Have you ever lost something and couldn’t get it out of your mind? Maybe you thought “Oh it’s just a material thing. I can replace it” yet it’s more than that.

It’s been a year since my daughter lost her suitcase traveling in Europe and still she mourns the favorite Indian pants, the necklace she stood in line for at a marketplace she’s only been to once…

Does it matter how it’s lost? Is it worse if it’s stolen? Or does it make it worse if you made one wrong decision, lapsed focus for a moment? Is it better if it’s lost through no fault of your own, seems fated?

FlixBus is pretty famous for losing luggage and never coming up with it again. The suitcase had a French address on its bag tag and repeated attempts were made to track it down.

Yesterday, when something lost in that moment on the bus through France came up yet again, I sang, “No regrets, bum bum bum bum bum, though your suitcase has gone astray…” (Phoebe Snow). My daughter was able to laugh and philosophize. But in ways she regrets her nine months in Europe because of that suitcase, at this point. Will the pain last forever?
